Political heavyweights will debate the theme of “Think globally, act locally”

Brussels (Friday 30th November 2018). On 6th December 2018, the European Livestock and Meat Trades Union (UECBV) will be organising its annual general meeting (AGM) at the Residence Palace in Brussels. Under the theme: “Think globally, act locally”, the political and economic challenges of the European meat industry will be tackled. The sector is facing a multitude of not only opportunities but also threats on both local and international fronts.
For the conference and its political session, the UECBV presents a roster of both international, EU and Belgian political key figures with Cecilia Malmström -EU Trade Commissioner-, Hiromichi Matsushima -Japanese Vice Minister for agriculture-, Pieter De Crem -Belgian Secretary of State for trade-, Denis Ducarme -Belgian Federal Minister for agriculture-, and Marc Tarabella -Member of the European Parliament-. The event will be moderated by the renowned VRT-journalist Wim De Vilder.
The debates will clarify the advantages or disadvantages of trade expansion for the EU agriculture and food sectors, and specifically the meat sector. The subjects for discussion are extremely relevant in today's climate considering the international trade tensions, the increased pressure on Free-Trade Agreements by NGOs and general vulnerability of today's EU livestock industry. But on the other hand, multiple sources show promise for more exports and broad economic opportunities for the EU Member States in the case of increased trade.
